Marble Wetlands Preserve

Public Access Threatened in the Crystal Valley

During 2020-21 CVEPA entered into a partnership with the Aspen Valley Land Trust with the goal of putting 55 acres of valuable wetlands near Marble into conservation. In the final days of 2021, the dream became reality.

Public Access Threatened in the Crystal Valley

  Residents of Dorais Way (at the north bridge to Redstone) have illegally gated and blocked public access to the 135-year-old historic public route along the Crystal. By doing this they have denied the public’s access to Pitkin County Open Space’s Filoha Meadows Nature Preserve. CVEPA has supported Pitkin County’s lawsuit against the homeowners’ actions. We await the District Court’s decision which is imminent.

Alabaster Mine on Avalanche Creek

   The Alabaster mine on Avalanche Creek was purchased by a major mining company in 2011.  There are a number of significant environmental concerns with their proposed expansion.   CVEPA has conducted a 3-year campaign to mitigate the negative impacts.

After reporting unauthorized dumping of highway debris on USFS land in 2007, CVEPA has worked with the Colorado Department of Transportation and the United States Forest Service to develop an appropriate long-term dump location at the foot of McClure Pass.

Coal Basin Reclamation

Coal Basin Reclamation

In 2001, the Colorado Department of Reclamation, Mining and Safety completed its 7-year reclamation program on land ravaged by a century of coal mining in upper Coal Basin.  Using a new technology, CVEPA has undertaken a creative program to address lingering revegetation problem areas in the basin that critically impact on-site erosion and downstream water quality of the Crystal River.

Thompson Divide

Coal Basin Reclamation

  The Thompson Divide area is 220,000 acres of backcountry situated in the heart of America’s most heavily recreated National Forest, the White River.  Described as a “Colorado Crown Jewel” by Governor John Hickenlooper, the Divide is home to hunting units that generate over 20,000 big-game licenses each year; summer range for thriving ranching operations; and one of the densest concentrations of inventoried roadless areas in the West.
